Liz’s District

I have the pleasure of representing some of the best neighborhoods in Boston, including parts of Jamaica Plain, Roslindale*, Roxbury, and Dorchester. My staff and I work hand in hand with crime watches, local businesses and community-based organizations every day to enhance our neighborhoods. I help neighbors organize against crime and support tenants in their struggles for safe and affordable housing. I team up with colleagues in city government on quality of life initiatives (like lowering the speed limit and enforcing noise ordinances), and recently helped Roslindale neighbors establish a Domestic Violence education program. I support initiatives that allow our senior citizens to live more independent, healthy lives in their own homes as they grow older. I partner with residents in our Public Housing developments to help organize and advocate for a better quality of life. Our weekly summer “Hot Dog Nights” in the South Street Neighborhood of Jamaica Plain have become a big hit and offer our kids and families a chance to meet and enjoy each other’s company. Similarly, the “Neighbors Together” events in the Archdale neighborhood of Roslindale (which I co-sponsor with Healthy Roslindale and the Sisters of St. Joseph at Casserly House) have become an effective and enjoyable method of building community and improving the quality of life of residents.

I know you too are hard at work to make our communities healthier and stronger, and I appreciate the opportunity to join you in those efforts!

*A Note on Redistricting

Every ten years, after the census, the State redraws district lines for state and federal level elected officials to account for changes and movements in population. The 11th Suffolk District has changed dramatically over the course of the last four years due to redistricting. It first changed during the 2002 election cycle after the Legislature passed a redistricting plan.

As of April 16, 2004, as a result of a federal lawsuit, the House once again changed most of the 17 Boston-based State Representative districts. The 11th Suffolk again shifted significantly with this new plan. The new 11th Suffolk as of April 27, 2004 now includes:
Ward 11, precincts 2-5, 7-10
Ward 12, precinct 7
Ward 14, precincts 1-4,6,7
Ward 19, precincts 6, 7

You can read more about the latest redistricting news on the Secretary of State’s website at: http://www.state.ma.us/sec/. Should you have questions about which district you live in after this latest redistricting, please feel free to contact Rep. Malia’s office at 617-722-2060.
